PROTEST; ASITU PRESIDENT WARNS BAYO ONANUGA
Following the accusation of being involved in the proposed hunger protest leveled against Peter Obi by
Bayo Onanuga, Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has said that Igbos will hold the presidential aid responsible if anything happens to Peter Obi.
Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s spokesman, had accused Obi of planning mayhem in Nigeria. Onanuga had also painted Obi as a failed presidential candidate who is frustrated, stressing that he should be held responsible for whatever crisis that would emanate from the action.
This development had sparked off wide condemnation from different quarters.
In a chat with TBE Magazine, Chief Emeka Diwe, the President General of Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) while reacting to Onanuga's allegation, warned the Presidential aid to be mindful of his utterances and should desist from making comments that are capable of causing crisis in the already tensed country.
He wondered why a Presidential aid who should be busy finding solutions to the plight of the people is engaging in propaganda and false allegations.
"It is disappointing that Bayo Onanuga has left the real thing and is now chasing shadows. Why will he be levelling such heavy accusation on Peter Obi? Does it mean that Onanuga does not know that many Nigerian families cannot afford one meal a day? Nigerians are wiser, gone are the days when people are easily distracted. Onanuga is not helping the administration he is part of. I had expected him to be part of Nigeria's solution instead of adding more problems to it".
"Patriotic Nigerians are looking for ways to bring Nigeria out of this mess and all he could do is to engage in baseless propaganda. IGBOS will hold Onanuga responsible if anything happens to our son, Peter Obi. The worst anyone could do now is to add more problems to the existing ones. I therefore ask Onanuga to carefully choose his words". Diwe said.
Also in response to the allegations, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has initiated legal action against the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, with his legal team demanding a retraction and N5 billion in damages for a defamatory publication that they claim has significantly harmed Obi’s reputation.
Young Nigerians are planning nationwide protests from August 1, 2024 to demand economic and political reforms, but the government is using all its resources to suppress them.
The young Nigerians have been mobilising and organising on social media and many have temporarily adopted the #EndBadGovernance slogan.
However, the government has been using several schemes, including meetings with traditional and religious leaders, as well as threats by security agencies to prevent the protests from happening or prevent them from turning violent if they hold.
