Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the judiciary to use December 15, 2023 Supreme court hearing on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's case to restore peace in Igbo land by releasing the IPOB leader.
Chief Emeka Diwe, the President of ASITU made this call in a chat with TBE Magazine recently in Umuahia. Diwe noted that the neglect on the rule of law and court judgements have not only presented Nigeria in bad light before the international community but has put a question mark on Nigeria's democracy.
"The constant neglect on the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu whom two courts have set free is a slap on the rule of law and one wonders the type of democracy at work in Nigeria".
"The release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only bring peace to Igbo land but will also better the economy of the region. Monday sit at home will end. The people calling for sit at home and others who have been alleged to be causing insecurity in Southeast have all been saying that they want Kanu released. The federal government will loose nothing in obeying court which has set him free. His continued detention is responsible for the insecurity in Southeast".
Emeka Diwe called on President Ahmed Bola and the judiciary to release the IPOB leader according to Enugu high court ruling which discharged and aquitted Kanu.
Justice Onovo of Enugu high court had declared IPOB proscription “unconstitutional and illegal.” He had also ordered the defendants to pay him N8bn damages and to tender a public apology to him through newspaper publications.
