Following the recent court order which declared the proscription of the INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA (IPOB) as a terrorist group illegal, the Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has demanded the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi KANU from prison.
Chief Emeka Diwe, the President General of ASITU made this call yesterday in Enugu while reacting to the court ruling on Kanu's case. The ASITU boss who had made several demands for the release of KANU after the court had set him free during the regime of Mohammadu Buhari expressed his gratitude to the ruling which once again set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free.
"I am happy that the proscription of IPOB has been declared illegal by the court. There is no where in the world where someone will be tagged a terrorist simply because he is leading a group who wants a peaceful secession. The agitation of our youths for self determination was born out of the marginalization of Igbos in Nigeria. I have made several calls for a dialogue as a way forward but the past administration of Muhammadu Buhari neglected it. You say you don't want BIAFRA to go, yet you keep marginalizing Igbos the more".
According TBE Magazine's source, Chief Emeka Diwe said that he expects the current administration of Ahmed Bola Tinubu not to follow the style of Mohammadu Buhari who did not have respect for court orders.
"I expect that the present administration will not to follow the paths of
the past administration of Buhari who never had respect for court orders. Nnamdi Kanu should be released immediately without delay. Like I have always said, it will bring peace to the southeast".
A Federal High Court sitting in Enugu State, had on October 26, 2023 declared the proscription of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), as a terrorist organization, unlawful and illegal.
It also ruled that the detention and prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu as a member of a terrorist group is illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.
Justice A.O. Onovo who delivered the landmark judgement held that self-determination is not a crime and thus cannot be used as a ground to arrest, detain and prosecute Nnamdi Kanu. The court also awarded N8 billion damages
to be paid to Nnamdi Kanu.
